Daily OPS Logbook Nº 03 (28/03/12)
Location: Ilha de Moçambique.
Weather: Sunny during the entire day, only scattered clouds in the afternoon. Calm to light winds of variable directions.
Sea: Calm inside the bay.
Number of dives and total bottom time: No dives.
Accumulated dives and total bottom time: None.
Work accomplished: DSV Discovery encountered a favorable current during the trip from Nacala and arrived well ahead of the estimated time. The ship anchored in front of the Alfandega pier at 00.10 hrs this morning. At 07.30 hrs we received on board the visit of the Port and Police authorities who spent part of the morning checking the papers of the ship and crew. Later we gave them a tour of the ship and showed them the survey equipment, etc. They left the ship around 09.30 hrs and we immediately started downloading a lot of material from the ship to our warehouse, as this will be stored as backup and not used at this stage. The cradle for Arvor was installed near the pier of Capitania in order to “dry dock” the ship during the next high tide tomorrow morning and give it a protective coating of paint under the waterline. Niki and Sandra had several meetings with the authorities in preparation of the new OPS season. A public presentation of the project will be made Monday 02.04. followed by a lunch for the islands mayor on board of the DSV. Alina went to Nampula accompanying the Captain and Engineer, who left to return to Indonesia.
Survey results: No survey activities today.
Recoveries: No recoveries.
Conservation works: The cleaning of the CCM continued, further flaking paint is being removed from the walls. No conservation works are presently taking place.
Comments: The Indonesian Captain and Engineer left Nampula at 09.30 hrs without problem.
Supardi Aulele (Captain)(OUT)
Rudy Rahman (Engineer)(OUT)
Daily OPS Logbook Nº 02 (27/03/12)
Location: Ilha de Mozambique and Nacala Harbor.
Weather: Sunny in the morning and partially cloudy in the afternoon. Calm to light winds of variable directions.
Sea: Calm inside the bay.
Number of dives and total bottom time: No dives.
Accumulated dives and total bottom time: None.
Work accomplished: In Nacala harbor the 6,000 lts of fresh water were served at 09.30 hrs. The 3,000 lts of fuel were served to the ship only at 15.00 hrs due to a delay of the banking system and the fact that the payment, done earlier in the morning, couldn’t be traced. DSV Discovery was dispatched from Nacala to Ilha de Mozambique at 16.30 hrs and immediately left the harbor. ETA for DSV Discovery at the Island of Mozambique is tomorrow, between 03.00 and 04.00 hrs. Various meetings with official entities were held by Niki Sandizell (CEO) at Ilha de Mozambique, whilst expecting the ships arrival with the rest of the team
Survey results: The second part of the team, at Ilha de Mozambique, continued with the survey of the “São Lourenço” bank. Today the survey was focused on the area of IDM-017 (Sta. Teresa, 1622) in order to make a comparative study of the results of the 2004 survey and the new results based on the use of the new magnetometer. The results were very encouraging! Several new and very well defined magnetic anomalies within the debris field of the wreck were recorded, allowing for a better understanding of this interesting site.
Recoveries: No recoveries.
Conservation works: The cleaning of the CCM started by removing the flaking paint from the walls. No conservation works are presently taking place.
Comments: The Operations car was temporarily fixed by Sio and Faure and left on the premises of the Harbor Master to be picked up in the following days.

Work accomplished: Our Expedition vessel, DSV Discovery, arrived to Nacala harbor, Mozambique on the 23rd of March at 15.30 hrs local time, after a challenging passage through the Indian Ocean. The ship departed from Jakarta, Indonesia, on the 17th of February at 12.30 hrs (GMT) with a crew of 7, increased fuel capacity and our survey boat Fastcraft towed behind. Due to security reasons (piracy waters) the route and details of its navigation were kept confidential and only known by the highest executives of the company and the crew members. The passage between Jakarta and Nacala took 31 days of navigation for a total of 4,571 nautical miles, with 4 days for refueling in Male, Maldives. Adverse weather conditions between the Maldives and the Seychelles demanded an intense effort from the crew for 5 consecutive days, but were finally overcome. DSV Discovery and its crew arrived safely to the Nacala harbor with only some minor repairs to be done in the next few days. Immediately after arrival the immigration, customs and fiscal formalities began and carried on through the weekend. Today these procedures finished satisfactorily and fresh water (6,000 lts) and fuel (3,000 lts) were ordered to be served tomorrow. Simultaneously, all official contacts and preparations with the authorities of Ilha de Mozambique had been carried out by Niki Sandizell (CEO) who is with us since the 23rd of March in order to help with the starting of the 2012 OPS.
Survey results: The second part of the team, currently at Ilha de Mozambique, started with the setting up of the newly arrived electronic survey equipment. The magnetometer G-880 was tested with excellent results and a large survey of the “São Lourenço” bank started. No significant magnetic anomaly was recorded in this area.
Recoveries: No recoveries.
Conservation works: The situation of the CCM was the same, as at the beginning of every season. Most of the paint has fallen off the walls during the months of break and repairs are urgently needed. The problem resides in the quality of the sand that has been used during the reconstruction of the building, which was not appropriate, thus the paint and finishing keep flaking off. The artefacts were inspected and were all in good condition.
Comments: Captain Supardi Aulele and Engineer Rudy Rahman, both hired for the passage of the Indian Ocean, left the ship today and went to our headquarters at Ilha de Mozambique. They will return to Indonesia next Wednesday 28th of March. The Operations car broke down in Nacala and Alina returned to Ilha in the evening with a rented car and driver from the island. Faure and Sio were working on the possible repair of the gearbox until late in the evening, but no solution was found.
